Gdańsk/Club Żak: The open call for the Residency/Premiere 2020

Club Żak is pleased to announce the open call for The Residency/Premiere 2020 contest for a project of contemporary dance performance realised within the framework of the 12. Gdańsk Dance Festival. The applicants are welcome to submit contemporary dance performance projects. The purpose of the contest is to support and promote contemporary dance and contemporary ballet. The contest is addressed to Polish dancers and participants of the Solo Dance Contest, organised by Club Żak as part of the Gdańsk Dance Festival. Entries may be submitted by persons living in Poland since 1 January 2019 (or longer) and by dancers who are based abroad and who presented their pieces at the Solo Dance Contest, organised as part of the Gdańsk Dance Festival between 2014-2019.


Selected projects will be realised in Club Żak from February to June 2020. Dancers will receive: funds for the project (6.000 PLN for the duet, and 10.000-20.000 PLN for performance with bigger cast), technical assistance during the general rehearsals (acoustics and lights), promotion, rehearsal space, and for two weeks will be working under the guidance of a mentor  a highly appreciated dancer and choreographer. In 2020, the following experts will be our mentors: Palle Granhøj from Denmark, Defne Erdur from Turkey and Nimrod Freed from Israel. In February and April, the projects will be premiered on the last day of the residency, the performance developed in May will have its premiere at the 12. Gdańsk Dance Festival on 5 June 2020.

The Mentors:


Nimord Freed – after 10 years of performing and creating in New York, he established Tami Dance Company in 2004. He teaches in Jerusalem Academy of Dance and in Kibbutzim College’s School of Dance Arts. His works have travelled to 5 continents and were presented at the most prominent festivals & leading cultural events in more than 25 countries.


Palle Granhøj – artistic director and founder of the company Granhøj Dans. Choreographer and dancer, creator of the so-called “Obstruction Technique”. We have had the pleasure to meet him as juror and mentor during Gdansk Dance Festival 2018. Palle has created over 30 full-evening dance pieces and dance-videos that won him several awards and have been presented in 49 countries.


Defne Erdur – artist and a therapist trained in Contemporary Dance (PhD), Sociology (MA), Inter-model Expressive Art Therapy, Meditation, and Trauma Healing. She performs and offers workshops around the world: regularly teaching at ImPulsTanz, Tanzhaus Zurich, Konservatorium Wien and others, working with professional dancers, therapists or migrant children. Defne is also the co-founder of, co-editor of and founder of the Moving Library.
