Warsaw/Warsaw Dance Department: Amanda Miller – ”Embracing our body and mind” choreographic and improvisational workshop

24 April 2019 | 11:00

workshop

On Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23-24, the Warsaw Dance Department will hold a dance improvisation workshop led by Amanda K. Miller – dancer, choreographer, Artistic Director of Pretty Ugly Dance Company and Ballett Freiburg/Pretty Ugly, dancer and choreographer at Ballet Frankfurt directed by William Forsythe. The workshops are open for professional and amateur dancers, to create dialogues with one another, not through a linear process – but through risk-taking, intuitive thinking, and resonant response, through listening to the space within the music, becoming aware of the nuances of the movement, attempting to balance and coordinate, to shift our perception of the stage and communicate effectively with each other and with the audience.

Miller’s instructional method involves the Rudolf Laban 9-point system, and techniques derived from years of experience in classical ballet, and as both dancer and choreographer in a range of different forms of contemporary dance and multi-disciplinarian events. The nine-point system has been an organizing principle for her in creating work for as many as 35 people, or as few as one, working with dancers, musicians, artist, monks and children. The use of spatial and mathematical diagrams, structural improvisations and graphic scores will also be practiced. There are no borders only bridges and all are welcome.

It’s a breaking of habits; creating freedoms and discovering new thought patterns and vocabulary. It is becoming transparent to ourselves and others through our own bodies. Communication becomes easier, more fearless, and more authentic. True expression. www.amandakmiller.com.

Structured improvisation workshop will be opened for the public to observe. The movement accompanied with the music and videos by Dougie Bowne. He had previously worked as a musician on compositions from Arto Lindsay for Amanda and Pretty Ugly beginning in the late 1980s. In the workshop 100 small pieces of music, each lasting 30–60 seconds will be used. This process recalls a Cunningham /Cage practice or as Cunningham and Brian Eno experimented.

Hiraeth – workshop presentation
Hiraeth is a Welsh word meaning “homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which may be never ours, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your path”. However, this melancholic definition understood on the body level means an unattachment, and the impermanence of our bodies; reflecting the permanent ability of ours to discover new inspirations coming from continuous change.
