Krakow Dance Theatre invites for the premiere of The Entrance that will be presented in Cracow within the dance programme – Rollercoaster. Collectors of Sensations organised by the Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor Cricoteka.
The Entrance is an international collaborative project created by choreographer Ayrin Ersöz (Turkey) members of Krakow Dance Theatre including the artistic director Eryk Makohon (Poland), the composer Sergej Maingardt (Germany) and the video artist Grzegorz Mart (Poland).
The artistic motivation for The Entrance is derived from the current refugee crisis in Europe. The artists, who conceive themselves as an international collaborative group, pose a question – “what choreography, music and the moving image can offer when analysing refuging bodies?”. Their goal is to transmit the humanitarian concern into an artistic form that sheds light on hidden and implicit biases surrounding the refugee crisis.
The problem of the entry of the Others into European societies has always been present in our history and it is very actual nowadays too. The Entrance explores the question of the validity of this problem by engaging artists from three different countries: Poland, Turkey, and Germany, thus presenting the same subject from three different perspectives. These perspectives are different because they are all embedded in completely different social, economic, political, and cultural contexts.
Refraining from any representational form the project focuses on the understanding the HOPE that is the triggering motivation for refuging bodies to embark on an excruciating journey, which in many cases ends with a tragedy. This HOPE is almost impossible to be traced in the highly industrialized and modernized life of the Western countries. Such HOPE can only be found in the liminal existence of the dancing bodies, in their overwhelming desire to dance and thus be continuously subjected to the state of entering and exiting the choreographic structure. As Walter Benjamin once said – “it is only for the sake of those without hope that hope is given to us”.
